Roleplay tips and advice

Post  Alexandria on Mon Jul 07, 2008 4:34 am

this thread is for those who are new to roleplaying or are curious about giving it a try.

1. create your character. name, age, physical appearance, homeland, powers (if you so choose), special skills (for example, do they know a style of combat or are they exceptional at baking?), personality

2. consider how your character might interact with others. if you have an idea or know about some characters yours may encounter, work from there. remember that there are some you may get along with, and some you may not. this is by no means reflects how the player views you as a person. this is just how their characters sees yours.

3. never take any storylines or character's actions personally. it is not that player's intent to hurt anyone's feelings. they are simply playing their character according to their personality, how they grew up, etc.

4. don't be afraid to ask someone for help regarding your storyline or theirs. you can even ask us Mods and the Admin. this is how we learn.

5. if you are involved in a storyline with someone or they are involved with yours, make sure both parties have the information they need to play out the storyline. lack of information will only cause confusion. Communication is key. also remember that sometimes you may have to compromise by changing or modifying your storyline or an aspect of it so that all players involved can keep it moving. it's about give and take.

6. don't feel hurt or neglected if you find that your storyline does not incite everyone to participate. everyone has the right to involve their characters in whatever storyline they choose, as do you.

7. remember that any character you choose to create must be original.

8. there are some terms that you'll encounter while you are roleplaying. here's a list:

-- ooc: Out Of Character.
-- au: Alternate Universe
-- oc: Original Character

9. be careful with any storyline that handles sensitive topics such as rape, murder, abuse etc. remember that these will make people uncomfortable. please treat them with respect. Don't simply say it happened to your character just because you're out of ideas. if you do not, you will be asked by the Admin to cease that storyline. full research and maturity regarding the topic is a must.

10. if you're nervous about starting out and want some practice before you interact with others, feel free to ask someone or me, the admin, for some private RP time. This way, you can practice with someone else, ask some questions, build confidence, and recieve advice if you need it.

--remember, you're never the only one who's just learning, or wants to improve. And most importantly, have fun. that's what this site is about.
